Horoscope - Nov 4, 2013

Aries

Today you might think you look awful and perhaps want to go out and change your whole look. Buy some new clothes and go for a workout. Even though you probably look pretty good, these activities make you feel good and increase your self-confidence. Your self-image is proportionate to your state of mind. You might just feel a bit down now.

Taurus

Today you might feel unloved even though there's no real reason for it. Your relationships should be pretty strong, but your biorhythms are down so you might be lacking in self-confidence. Phone a close friend and get together. Go shopping or to a movie and raise your spirits. By the end of the day you'll feel like your old self again!

Gemini

Plans to get together with friends tonight could be delayed by responsibilities. It won't stop you but it will mean getting together a little later. Someone close to you might feel a little down and seek a sympathetic ear. Try to get this person to forget his or her insecurities and see the situation as it is.

Cancer

You might have to work just a little harder to make money now. This might involve putting in extra time on a task, or it could simply mean that you have to make a few extra trips to the bank. Artistic insights might not be coming as profusely as usual, but this is all right. Relax and let things be, and the ideas will start coming again.

Leo

A delay in receiving acknowledgment of some sort could happen today. This might be disappointing, but don't let it get you down. You'll receive it, just maybe not on time! This isn't a good day to execute any legal contracts or start a vacation. It's a great day to take care of mundane tasks. Get busy!

Virgo

Depressing news about the state of the world economy or stock market could have you feeling gloomy and wondering about your financial future. Don't worry. The world economy is in pretty good shape and you should be, too. Equity in property investments could be down, but they should recover shortly. Go with the flow and don't believe everything you read or hear.

Libra

A close friend or romantic partner might not seem communicative today and you might wonder whether this person still cares for you. He or she is experiencing a few difficulties, perhaps involving money, and so isn't particularly good company. Listen if your friend wants to talk, but otherwise just be there. That's what is important anyway.

Scorpio

Do you have a garden or some houseplants that seem a little droopy? Don't worry about whether or not they're all going to die. Revive them! You might feel that some things are more trouble than they're worth. Give yourself space to be gloomy for a while and then perk yourself up. Buy yourself a present.

Sagittarius

Today close friends, a love partner, or children may appear to be in a quiet, melancholy mood. You might wonder if you've done something to cause it, but it probably has very little to do with you, if anything. Responsibilities could be weighing on everyone, including you. The only answer is to pitch in and take care of business. Then treat yourselves afterward!

Capricorn

Home responsibilities may increase markedly today, leaving you feeling like you're the only member of the household getting anything done. You might give in to gloom, but don't dwell on it for too long. You will feel a lot better if you pitch in and take care of whatever needs to be done and then treat yourself by going out to celebrate. Go to a movie, or better yet, a concert.

Aquarius

Hurry up and wait is today's phrase. A visit from a close friend, love partner, or colleague might be delayed, perhaps because of something regarding money or possibly the arts. It keeps you trapped waiting, unable to go anywhere. At times like this, it's best to distract yourself. Find something to do that engrosses you and the time will go by more quickly.

Pisces

You've been doing well financially. You want to do better, but you might feel temporarily discouraged. It seems you have to keep working harder to keep up the pace. This is more the result of low biorhythms than any true assessment of your situation. Today you might have to work a little harder, but you'll get the results you want. Tomorrow will then be easier on you.

5 Exercises You Don’t Do but Should

Getting yourself to the gym is a great accomplishment in itself. Many people never take that step to improve their health and their lives. But since you do, don’t you think you should be doing the best and most efficient exercises to make the most out of your time? Spending time at the gym is only as effective as you make it.
Getting stuck in the same routine diminishes the results you get from your workouts and can leave you bored and uninterested in your workouts.
It’s important for your mind and your body to vary things; the more confused your muscles are, the better the results you’ll see from your time at the gym.

Take this opportunity to read about 5 exercises you likely aren’t doing but definitely should. It’s a great chance to start mixing up your workouts and getting more for your time and money.

1. KETTLEBELL/DUMBBELL SWING

The swing is a great exercise that many people ignore in the gym. It’s best when used with a kettlebell, but works fine with a dumbbell as well. The hip workout you get from a swing is hard to beat and helps in any athletic activity. Make sure you drive the hips forward while driving your heels into the ground to get the most out of the exercise.

2. SWIMMING
Plain and simple, swimming is one of the best exercises you can do for your entire body. In many ways it is the perfect exercise for humans. Joints do not bear force or weight while swimming. In addition to that, swimming is one of, if not the most calorie intensive exercises you can do. Your muscles and lungs will be worked in different ways compared to non-swimming exercises and you can burn upwards of 450 calories depending on the stroke in as little as 30 minutes. Talk about an efficient use of your time!

3. ARCHED BACK PULL-UPS
If you’re into fitness, you know how important and beneficial exercises like pull-ups are. They work your entire upper body from the back to the forearms. Pull-ups are one of the best body weight exercises you can do. The reason an arched back pull-up is more efficient than a regular pull-up is because it works all of your pulling muscles at once. Arching your back using a neutral grip gives you a horizontal and vertical pull in one motion while also intensely working the abdominal area. When you reach the top of the pull your chest should touch your hands and your back and legs should be near-parallel with the floor.

4. OVERHEAD SQUAT
This is an exercise that you must be careful with, to ensure you don’t use too much weight when you start. It involves holding an Olympic bar overhead in a wide grip. Keep your shoulders squeezed and arms extended while you enter a squat and push yourself back up. This exercise is great because it improves strength, flexibility, balance, core strength, and also helps to improve stabilization in your shoulders.

5. RENEGADE ROWS / WALKING RENEGADE ROWS
While it has a tough sounding name, it really isn’t too bad once you start incorporating this exercise into your regular workouts. A renegade row is great for anyone because it works every muscle in the upper body at once. Your legs and core also get a workout as they stabilize your body to keep you balanced and in control of the weights. These can be done with kettlebells or dumbbells (hex-shaped are best) and simply involve a few simple steps. For a better idea of how to do renegade rows, check out this video:

10 Great Optical Illusion Pictures

Do we always see what we think we see?

Here is a great collection of free optical illusion pictures
Make your way through the pictures below, and read the text under each picture if you have difficulty noticing anything.

Is the ladder going up or down?
Are the dots in between the squares white, black or grey?

Are the lines paralell or crooked?

How many legs does this elephant have?

Focus on the dot in the middle and then move your head backwards and forwards.

Is this picture still or moving?

Is there anything in between the different squares?

Is this the face of a lady or a word? (Try tilting your head sideways)

This is a real amazing illusion! Focus on the 4 dots in the middle of the picture for 30 seconds. Then look at a blank wall and see what you see or more importantly - who do you see? Maybe blink your eyes a few times to find out.

Is this even possible?

How Do Optical Illusions Work?

The connection between our eyes and our mind is a fascinating process that operates on so many different levels. ThisOptical Illusion Test is a great example of how sometimes what we see is different then what is real. This is because what we see is processed on different levels, both consciously and subconsciously and is also not always just from what we see through our eyes but also from what our mind projects to our eyes and we subsequently consiously become aware of.

In this test the pictures appear to be moving even though they are really still. This is an example of our eyes relaying information to the brain and not being able to clearly identify exactly what it is what we see through our conscious awareness. The effect is heightened because our eyes perceive depth through the stereo effect created through each of our eyes.

The human mind is a complex processor of information that we see, hear, smell, touch and taste. However the ability of the mind to extend beyond these five senses when it comes to how we perceive different things is quite amazing. For example there are other vibrational energies and frequencies that exist outside of sensory perception levels. An instance of this can be seen in this article on Intuition & Human Sensing Systems. Science describes and acknowledges these frequencies on the Electromagnetic Spectrum Chart, shwoing a wide range of frequencies existing well beyond and above our own sensory perceptions.

It is interesting to note that the subliminal messages on Rick Collingwood's Self Hypnosis CDs & MP3s work in much the same way as an optical illusion only using our ears instead of our eyes. Our subconscious mind processes the subliminals messages although we do not consciously hear them.

What to Drink to Enjoy Long Youth

Do you want to live forever? Maybe not. Do you want to stay young forever? Most likely. Would you believe if you drank these following healthy drinks you will stay young forever? Probably not.
We’re just kidding. However, if you drink these, you stand a chance of staying healthy for a long time. According to Toronto-based nutrition and health expert Dr. Rhea Meta, the secret to prolonged youth and fixing pre-existing health problems is just simple; eat healthy (therefore unprocessed) foods.

Super-Berry Antioxidant Smoothie

Antioxidants terminate the oxidation of cells by removing free radicals. To put it simply antioxidants cause good changes in our cells and prevent cancer and heart disease. Berries are a good source for antioxidants.
“Antioxidants are great. They are found in things like blueberries, blackberries, goji berries,” says Mehta, “there’s a really high antioxidant effect through berries which is one of the reasons why I capitalize on them for this recipe. They’re also sweet and beautiful tasting.”
For this smoothie you will need:
  • 1 cup greens (choose between romaine, spinach, kale, chard or bok choy)
  • 1 cup berries (choose between blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)
  • 1/4 cup goji berries
  • 1 tbsp. raw cacao (raw chocolate powder)
  • 1 tbsp. almond butter
  • 1 tbsp. chia or hemp seeds
Blend all the ingredients and serve, add more water to taste. This drink is recommended as a whole-food meal substitute or for an afternoon snack.

Exotic Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie

Inflammation can be caused by many things, but the main cause of this is the typical western diet, says Meta, particularly the regular consumption of foods with saturated fat, common allergens such as wheat, soy and dairy, and foods high in refined sugar.
For this recipe, use as base 2.5 cups of an unsweetened almond or hemp milk. Then add:
  • 1 cup greens (choose between romaine, spinach, kale, chard, bok choy)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup papaya (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 tbsp. flax oil or flax seeds
  • 1 tsp. spirulina, chlorella or blue-green algae
Blend all the ingredients and serve. Add more dairy-free milk or water to taste.
This drink is recommended as a whole-food meal substitute or for an afternoon snack.

Cleansing Anti-inflammatory Lemon Drink

For most of us, most days are busy days; not all of us have the time to make a complicated drink. For the kind of people always on the go, this quick lemon-based drink should do.
For this recipe, use as base a cup of warm water. Then add:
  • 1/2 lemon, freshly squeezed
  • 1/8 tsp. turmeric (freshly grated or powder)
  • 1/8 tsp. ginger (freshly grated or powder)
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon (freshly grated or powder)
  • A pinch of cayenne
  • raw (unpasteurized) honey to taste (optional)
Stir and drink on an empty stomach. This drink is recommended to be taken first thing in the morning and in between meals.

Fruit and Nut Chia Pudding

You also have good bacteria in you. They are in your digestive system and they help with its functions. It’s only fair you do your best to help them. What do they need? Fiber, says Mehta, which can be found in seeds like hemp and chia.
“The fiber is going to be supporting your gut microflora which aids in nutrient absorption and the balancing of good bacteria. Our gut microbiome, when healthy, also produces vitamins that we rarely get from our diet,” she says. The seeds are also rich in protein and essential fatty acids.
For this recipe you will need:
  • 2 tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond or hemp milk
  • 1/8 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup berries (blueberries and/or blackberries)
  • 1 tbsp. sesame seeds
Add chia seeds to milk, stir then let sit for 10 minutes, mixing once or twice. Add the other ingredients, mix then serve.

Green or White Tea with Organic Leaves

Both are known to prolong your life. So what’s the difference between green tea and white tea aside from the color?
“There is a difference in the amount of antioxidants,” says Mehta, “there’s a lot of debate over what’s considered healthier. Green tea is a bit of a classic but white tea has recently been discovered as having more antioxidants. If you want to get the most out of your one tea a day, I would go with white tea.”
You can add lemon and/or ginger slices for an added variety. This is recommended in the morning and/or in between meals.
There are other healthy drinks to try.

Banana-Ginger smoothie

The combination may strike you as odd. However, ginger has long been recommended as a remedy for nausea and motion sickness, even heartburn. Banana is a natural antacid so it goes well with ginger
For this recipe you will need:
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) vanilla yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Orange smoothie

Nothing refreshes like a glass of fresh OJ, but why not put a little imagination into it.
For this recipe you will need:
  • 1 navel orange, peeled
  • 1/4 cup fat-free half-and-half or fat-free yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ice cubes
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Green Tea, Blueberry, and Banana Smoothie

Going back to what has been mentioned; green tea can prolong your life, berries have lots of antioxidants and bananas are a natural antacid. Why not have them all in a single drink?
For this recipe you will need:
  • 3 tbsp. water
  • 1 green tea bag
  • 2 tsp. honey
  • 1 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 med banana
  • 3/4 cup calcium fortified light vanilla soy milk
In small bowl, microwave water on high until steaming hot. Add the tea bag and allow to brew for three minutes. Remove the tea bag. Stir honey into the tea until it dissolves.
In a blender that can crush ice, combine berries, banana, and milk.
Add tea to blender. Blend ingredients on “ice crush” or highest setting until smooth. Pour smoothie into tall glass and serve.
“If you are eating primarily living foods, if you are drinking a lot of water, if you are chewing really well, if you are deep breathing, if you are happy – if all of those were in place, I believe you could definitely look 20 years younger,” says Mehta.

12 Famous Quotes That People Always Get Wrong

Wordsmiths like Shakespeare and Robert Frost loved their sarcasm. But when you take comments like that out of context, they can mean the exact opposite of the author's intention.
That hasn't stopped us from spouting famous lines, many from classic literature, however we see fit.

We created a list of some frequently used quotes that people just don't understand. Some came from this Quora post. Others, we added from bits and pieces of our high school lit classes.

1. "I took the road less traveled." In Robert Frost's culturally omnipresent poem, "The Road Not Taken," he tries to decide which of two paths he should take. He looks down one but chooses the second, "just as fair" and "worn really about the same."

If you read the entire poem, the last stanza regales how he'll say "with a sigh" that his decision "made all the difference."

In reality, Frost arbitrarily chose his path, which didn't matter in the long run. He just wants to hide his pessimism.

Of course everyone today uses the quote as evidence of "forging your own path," "going your own way" and all those other tautologies about fate and individualism.

2. "Money is the root of all evil." Not really. The love of money is the root of all evil, according to Timothy 6:10 from the King James Bible

3. "Nice guys finish last." Nice guys actually finish seventh. Leo Durocher, nicknamed Leo the Lip, served as the field manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers during the height of the Giants-Dodgers rivalry. He made some comment about Mel Ott, right-fielder for the Giants, being too nice, which made the team finish in seventh place. "Baseball Digest" later reprinted the column in which his quote appeared but changed "seventh" to "last place," according to Freakonomics blog.

Leo's misquoted words soon became a credo for over-aggressive coaches and guys with no romantic game everywhere.

4. Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo? In most high school adaptations of Shakespeare's well-known play, Juliet raises a hand to her furrowed brow, searching for her lover from a balcony. But "wherefore art" doesn't mean "where." It means "why." Juliet questions why fate made Romeo a Montague, her family's sworn enemy.

5. “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Most attribute this insight to Voltaire. In reality, Evelyn Beatrice Hall, a writer born two hundred years later, paraphrased a quote from Voltaire's "Treatise on Tolerance," which begged for understanding between religions.

Still, some report the original reads, "Think for yourselves and let other enjoy the privilege to do so too." But those words never appear in Voltaire's essay either.

6. "Love makes the world go 'round." The Duchess, a hideous character in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland," makes this comment in passing right after she advocates beating her baby for sneezing. In context, the author meant the sweet quip sarcastically. But that didn't stop Ashlee Simpson from making a terrible song.

7. "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em." In Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," Maria writes a letter to Malvolio, trying to convince him that another character, Olivia, loves him — dramatic, right? Maria uses the quote to appeal to Malvolio's ego, that Olivia (the false author) cannot deny his greatness. Thanks, Sparknotes.

8. "Oh East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet.” Talking heads in foreign policy sometimes use this quote as evidence that opposite sides of the globe will never see eye-to-eye. But if they read just a little farther in Rudyard Kipling's ballad, the next lines read, "But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth/When two strong men stand face to face, tho' they come from the ends of the earth."

Essentially, world colonization will happen regardless of geo-political borders, and we should all just get along.

9. "The Devil is in the details." Lazy people somehow bastardized a brilliant German architect's words to mean the exact opposite. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe really said, "God is in the details." He's also credited with another famous aphorism: "Less is more."

10. "Good fences make good neighbors." Once again, Bobby Frost wrote a widely misunderstood poem. In "Mending Wall," a fence separates two neighbors' yards. Every spring, they collaborate and fix it. But in the process, they disagree on whether they need a barrier at all. Frost makes the last line of the poem ironic. These two curmudgeons simply keep their fence out of tradition, even though it means more work for them.

11. "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" More than one slick love letter has included this phrase. But arguably Shakespeare's most famous sonnet praised a man, not a woman. He actually wrote hundreds of sonnets about this guy, his dearest friend.

12. "Blood is thicker than water." This gets uttered around awkward family photos on the mantel of nearly every home in the country. The original phrase, however, meant the opposite. An earlier proverb preached, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." In this case, "water of the womb" refers to family while "blood of the covenant" means blood shed by soldiers. So really, military bonds trump your siblings and parents.
